De Zweedse gitarist Ulf Wakenius zoekt op ‘Momento Magico‘ muzikaal de rust op. Op deze vijftiende cd die hij uitbrengt onder zijn eigen naam, begeleidt hij zichzelf op akoestisch gitaar. Wakenius werkte jarenlang samen met Oscar Petersen, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker en Jack DeJohnette en brengt sinds 1992 solo-cd’s uit.

Ulf Wakenius is de meester van de melodie. Soms klein, lieflijk en sober dan weer groots, ritmisch en overweldigend, maar steeds gespeeld met uiterste precisie. Hij is zijn eigen begeleider en solist op akoestische gitaren: zowel met metalen als nylon snaren waarop hij heen en weer switcht tussen pop-achtige melodiëen en jazz gerelateerd werk (‘Notes for OP And Wes‘). Zijn delicaat gitaar gebruik en zijn uitgekiende percussieve manier van spelen geeft deze Zweedse gitarist een enorme diepgang waarbij je ritmische percussie als het ware tussen de noten hoort. Bovendien is hij in enkele stukken geïnspireerd door muziek uit andere continenten. Alhoewel dat uitgangspunt te waarderen is, is de uitvoering soms wat mager. Het Chinese ‘The Dragon’ komt niet veel verder dan een pentatonisch (5-toonladder) melodietje en in het Malinese ‘Mali on my mind‘ is de gitaarsound voorzien van een trillende variant met een kabbelend melodietje. ‘Hindustan Blues’ daarentegen is spannend met een mooie Hundoestaanse flair die aansluit bij de muziek van de Indiase slidegitarist Debashish Bhattacharya. Al met al is ‘Momento Magico’ een album waar topgitarist Wakenius je laat genieten van veelzijdig gitaarspel en dat ook nog eens fantastisch doet!

The Swedish guitarist Ulf Wakenius finds musical rest on ‘Momento Magico‘. It’s his fiteenth album under his own name. He accompanies himself on acoustic guitar. Wakenius worked together with Oscar Petersen, Pat Metheny, Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker and Jack DeJohnette. He released solo albums since 1992.

Ulf Wakenius is a master in melody. Sometimes small, lovely and sober but also big, rhythmic, overwhelming and magnificent. All played very accurately. He plays his own accompany and solo’s on acoustic guitars: steel string and nylon wired. He floats in between pop melodies and jazz related work (‘Notes for OP And Wes‘). His delicate guitar use and his percussive way of playing gives this Swedish guitarist an enormous depth. In a way you hear the percussions in between the notes. Above all, some of his pieces are inspired by music from other continents. Although this is a great starting point, some versions are a little thin. The Chinese ‘The Dragon’ is a small pentatonic (five-scale) melody and the Malian ‘Mali on my mind‘ the guitars sound is added with vibrating strings with a high pitched murmuring melody. ‘Hindustan Blues’ is more exciting because of it’s Indian flavour that leans back to the music of the Indian slide guitarist Debashish Bhattacharya. ‘Momento Magico’ is still a remarkable record of top musician Wakenius who shows you the wonderful world of the multifaceted guitar and he plays it fantastic!
