De Franse groep L’Hijaz Car brengt voor het eerst als autonoom gezelschap een cd op de markt. Het kwintet heeft een afwijkende bezetting: ûd (Arabische luit), percussie, contrabas, basklarinet en tarhu (soort viool) en speelt een mix van Zuid-Europese en Orientaalse jazz-impro.

L’Hijaz Car wordt in 2001 opgericht door ûd (Arabische luit) speler Gregory Dargent. De groep brengt twee cd’s op de markt; waaronder in 2008 het schitterend album ‘Riders of the Aurès’ met zangeres Houria Aïchi. Op deze derde ‘solo’ cd speelt het kwintet volledig instrumentaal en beweegt door een ruw Mediterraans landschap met Oriëntaalse kleuren. De muziek is doordrenkt met oosterse en westerse invloeden die moeiteloos in elkaar overlopen. Spannend en onverwacht met verrassende ritmische wisselingen en opmerkelijk veel dynamische verschillen. Unisono (eenstemmig) thema’s worden omgetoverd tot broeierige improvisaties waarbij warme muzikale zweetdruppels over je voorhoofd sijpelen. Prachtig is de combinatie van de snelle wendbare ûd met de ronde, hese klank van de basklarinet tegen een brede percussie klank van o.a. daf (hand trom) en tombak (Perzische trom). Bijzonder is de tarhu, een betrekkelijk nieuw strijkinstrument dat enigszins lijkt op de Iraanse kemenche: een spike fiddle die rechtop wordt bespeeld. L’Hijâz’Car is een bijzonder kwintet dat, wars van stijlen, ‘brandende’ muziek maakt: soms smeulend dan weer hevig oplaaiend maar steeds zeer intens!

The French band L’Hijaz Car comes up with their first instrumental album. In a fine cast of oud (Arabian lute), percussion, double bass, bass clarinet en tarhu (kind of violin) they play a mix of South European and Oriental jazz improvising.

L’Hijaz Car was esthablished in 2001 by oud player Gregory Dargent. The group released two albums: in 2008 the wonderful ‘Riders of the Aurès’ with singer Houria Aïchi. On this third record the quintet plays a full instrumental repertoire that leads you to a rough Mediterranean landscape with a lot of Oriental colours. The music is filled with East and Western influences that mix very well. Exciting and unexpected music with surprising changes and remarkable dynamic movements. Unisono (one voiced) theme’s are being transformed into oppressive improvisations that gives you musical sweat on your forehead. Beautiful is the combination of the agile oud with the round and hoarse sound of the bass clarinet in combination with broad percussion of the daf (hand drum) and the tombak (Persian drum). Exciting is the tarhu: a new instrument that is familiar with the Persian kemence. A spike fiddle played straight. L’Hijâz’Car is a wonderful quintet, that doesn’t compose in style but in ‘burning’ music. Sometimes bouldering or blazed up and always intensive!
