Dmitry Shostakovich was zo onder de indruk van het celloconcert van Prokofiev, dat hij in nog geen drie weken zijn ‘Concert voor cello en orkest no.1’ componeerde in 1959. Voor cellist Mstislav Rostropovich (leerling van Shostakovich) werd een droom werkelijkheid aangezien Shostakovich het werk speciaal voor hem componeerde.

De cd ‘Rostropovich plays Shostakovich’ bevat (mono) opnames uit 1959, ’60 en ’67. Werken van Shostakovich gespeeld door Mstislav Rostropovich, een van de beste cellisten uit de 20ste eeuw. Hij studeerde compositie bij Shostakovich en tijdens die studie ontstond er een vriendschappelijke band met de componist. Shostakovich droeg zijn ‘Concert voor cello en orkest no.1’ (op.107) en acht jaar later ook ‘Concert no.2‘ op aan Mstislav Rostropovich. Beiden werken staan op deze cd en het ‘Concert no.1’ zelfs twee keer. Mooi is het verschil tussen beiden versies. De ene is de cd-première (Moskou 1959) en de ander een opname gemaakt tijdens het Lente Festival in Praag 1960. De laatste is niet alleen beter opgenomen maar ook iets sneller in tempo en een stuk intenser, waaruit blijkt dat de solist het werk nog iets meer in de vingers had. Verder vinden we de ‘Sonate voor cello en piano in d mineur’ op dit album. Een werk dat  Shostakovich schreef in 1934, achtentwintig jaar oud. Een schitterend lyrische compositie met een opvallend derde deel, dat opent met lage sonore klank van de cello aangevuld met plukakkoorden van het klavier. ‘Rostropovich plays Shostakovich’ is een fraai album. En, alhoewel de geluidskwaliteit niet ‘2014‘ is, is de uitvoering zijn tijd ver vooruit. Meesterlijk mooi!

Dmitry Shostakovich was so impressed by the cello concerto of Prokofiev, that he wrote his ‘Concerto for cello and orchestra no.1’ in almost three weeks in 1959. For Mstislav Rostropovich (student of Shostakovich) a dream came true because Shostakovich dedicated this work to him.

On the album ‘Rostropovich plays Shostakovich’ we hear (mono) recordings from 1959, ’60 and ’67. Work composed by Shostakovich played by Mstislav Rostropovich, one of the major solists from the 20th century. He studied composition by Shostakovich and became a close friend to the composer. Shostakovich dedicated his ‘Concerto for cello and orchestra no.1’ and his eight years later composed ‘Concerto no.2‘ to Mstislav Rostropovich. Both works are on this album and ‘Concerto no. 1’ even twice. Remarkable is the difference between both versions. The cd première (Moscow 1959) and a Spring Festival recording from Prague 1960. The last one is better recorded, in a quicker tempo and played more intense by the soloist who knew the composition for a half year since then. We also find the wonderful ‘Sonata for cello and piano in d minor’ on this cd. A lyrical and splendid piece written by Shostakovich in 1934, twenty eight years old, with remarkable third part that opens with a low warm cello sound accompanied by twinkling piano chords. ‘Rostropovich plays Shostakovich’ is a fine album. And, although the sound quality is not ‘2014′, the performance is head of it’s time. Brilliant!
