Philip Catherine is een gitarist die, als je hem eenmaal hebt gehoord, niet meer uit je hoofd verdwijnt. Zijn spel, zijn composities, zijn divers gitaargebruik en vooral zijn solo’s zijn voortreffelijk. Een muzikale veelzijdigheid die ook terug te vinden is op de duo-cd ‘New Folks’ die hij opnam met de Duitse contrabassist Martin Wind.

Geboren uit een Engelse moeder en Belgische vader groeit Philip Catherine na de W.O.II op in Brussel. Aanvankelijk wordt hij geïnspireerd door de muziek van Django Reinhardt en later door John McLaughlin en Larry Coryell met wie hij de legendarische L.P. ‘Twin House‘ (1976) opneemt. Wordt vanaf zijn zeventiende professioneel en beweegt zich muzikaal o.a. rond de jazz-rock via violist Jean-Luc Ponty en de groep Pork Pie, van de geweldige Nederlandse pianist Jasper van ’t Hof, maar neemt ook zes albums op met trompettist Chet Baker.

Philip Catherine is een toonvast gitarist met een vastberaden en zeker touché. Herkenbaar door zijn verhalende solistische lijnen met duidelijke structuur en opbouw. Zijn spel is verzorgd en opgeruimd, maar daardoor zeker niet obligaat. Integendeel: we horen hem vervormen, prachtige akoestisch, heerlijke vibrato en aanzwellend spelen: waardoor zijn gitaaraanslag niet te horen is (‘Song for D‘) en zijn instrument klinkt als een steelgitaar. Maar bovenal horen we het strak helder en zo herkenbare Catherine gitaargeluid met die mooi ronde (jazz)gitaar kleur, dat hem tot een jazzlegende maakt. ‘New Folks’ werd opgenomen met de in New York wonende Duitse contrabassist Martin Wind (1968). Deze twee musici vullen elkaar perfect aan: zonder drums waardoor de muziek lucht en ruimte krijgt en er open atmosfeer ontstaat. Zó ritmisch gespeeld waardoor het lijkt alsof de drums ‘als een geest‘ toch aanwezig is. Solo’s en begeleidingen (onzuiver gestreken bas in ‘Sublime‘) wisselen elkaar organisch af en zorgen voor een gevarieerd album. De meeste stukken zijn bestaand werk aangevuld met vier nieuwe composities van Catherine en twee van Martin Wind en bewegen rond rock, funk en bebop. Philip Catherine, inmiddels de 70 gepasseerd, bewijst met ‘New Folks’ dat leeftijd ondergeschikt is aan kwaliteit en levert met Martin Wind een tijdloos album!

Philip Catherine is a remarkable and recognizable guitarist. The way he plays, his compositions, his varied guitar use and above all, his solo’s are splendid. A musical diversity which we find on the duo album ‘New Folks’ assisted by the German double bass player Martin Wind.

Born from a English mother and a Belgium father, Philip Catherine grew up in Brussels after W.O. II. At first inspired by Django Reinhardt and later by John McLaughlin and Larry Coryell with whom he recorded the legendary album ‘Twin House‘ (1976). Catherine became professional form his 17th and played jazz-rock with the violinist Jean-Luc Ponty and the group Pork Pie, from the great Dutch pianist Jasper van ’t Hof, but also recorded six albums with Chet Baker.

Philip Catherine is a pure guitarist with a purposeful and secure touché. Recognizable by his storytelling solo’s with a clear structure. His playing is precise and tidy but not accustomed. Not at all: his guitars sounds fuzzy, acoustic clear, lovely vibrato and swelling sound without the attack. That makes his instrument sound like a steel guitar. But above all, his tight and clear Catherine guitar sound is great, with a warm jazz guitar colour. ‘New Folks’ was recorded with the New York living German double bass player Martin Wind (1968). These two wonderful musicians fit perfect: without drums. That gives the music space and an open atmosphere. Their playing is so tight and rhythmic that the drums may sound in your ear ‘like a phantom’. Solo’s and accompanies (unclear double bass in ‘Sublime‘) change easily and makes the album a varies one. Most of the pieces are originals added with four pieces by Catherine and two by Martin Wind. Philip Catherine, 71 years now, proves with ‘New Folks’ that age is unimportant to quality and he recored a timeless record together with Martin Wind!
