Haar debuut ‘Sek‘ (2006) bevatte klassiek Turks repertoire, terwijl haar tweede cd ‘Istanbul Secret’s‘ (’07) het moderne Istanboel vertegenwoordigd. ‘Karadeniz‘ uit 2008 staat vol met meeslepende folkliedjes van de Zwarte Zee. Şevval Sam is een veelzijdige vrouw. Geboren in de metropool Istanboel 1973, studeert ze kunstgeschiedenis en grafische vormgeving aan de Marmara Universiteit. Ze is ook actrice en acteert veelvuldig op de Turkse televisie in series en films maar kiest uiteindelijk voor de muziek. Ze treedt daarmee in de voetsporen van haar moeder Leman Sam, bekende Turkse zangeres die ooit samenwerkte met de legendarische politicus en musicus Züflü Levaneli.

Het album ‘Tango’ opent met een aantal stukken die verwijzen naar de ‘Tango Nuevo‘ zoals die werd ontwikkeld door Astor Piazzolla midden vorige eeuw, waarbij uitgekiende arrangementen met veel dynamiek, gebruik van bandoneon en improvisatie belangrijk werd. Iets soortgelijks vinden we terug op ‘Tango’ van Şevval Sam, zij het in de light versie: weinig gedurfd en redelijk braaf. Halverwege de cd, keer het tij en wordt het wel interessant; wordt de muziek aangevuld met trompet, jankende viool, ûd (Arabische luit), elektronica en (Turkse) folkelementen. De tango blijft duidelijk aanwezig. Maar het is juist die mix van Turkse klanken en tango die je rillingen bezorgd. Niet in de laatste plaats door de stem van Şevval Sam die heerlijk soepel beweegt door het tango firmament dat juist met die Oriëntaalse invloed enorm rijk wordt. In een enkel stuk treffen we de ‘Nuevo Tango’ aan, een elektronische tango stroming (ontwikkeld begin 21ste eeuw) van o.a. het Gotan Project en El Juntacadaveres. Dat plaatst het Şevval Sam ‘Tango’ album in een nog breder perspectief en maakt het project zeker de moeite waard.

The Turkish singer Şevval Sam recorded several theme-albums for years. For example, her début ‘Sek‘ (2006) with Turkish repertoire and her album ‘Karadeniz‘ from 2008 which is full of folk songs from the Black Sea. Her last album ‘Tango‘ is inspired by the tango music of Astor Piazzolla….

Şevval Sam is a multilateral woman. Born in Istanbul in 1973, studied Art History and Graphic Design at the Marmara University. She’s also an actor in several Turkish series and movies but finally she choose for the music. Like her mother Leman Sam, a famous Turkish singer who worked with the legendary politician and musician Züflü Levaneli.

Her album ‘Tango’ opens with a few pieces, related to the ‘Tango Nuevo‘ of Astor Piazzolla. He developed this tango stye in the ’50’s with arrangements full of dynamics and the bandoneón and improvisations became more important. Familiar music we find on ‘Tango’ of Şevval Sam, but in a ‘light’ version. Less daring and reasonable gallant. On the half of the album, the atmosphere changes and the music becomes more interesting. Trumpet, crying violin, ûd (Arabic lute), electronics and (Turkish) folk elements are added. The tango is still in the background. But the mix of Turkish sounds and tango music gives a splendid vibration. And overall, the voice of Şevval Sam which is extremely flexible in this tango atmosphere. In a few pieces we hear ‘Nuevo Tango’, the electronic side of tango music developed at the beginning of the 20th century by the Gotan Project or El Juntacadaveres for example. That gives Şevval Sam ‘Tango’ album even a wider perspective and makes this project worthwhile.
