Al decennia lang zingt het ensemble Arinushka uit Vilnius traditionele muziek uit Litouwen, een van de drie Baltische Staten. De componist Linas Rimša nam met het folk ensemble Arinushka veertien stukken op die hij speciaal voor de cd ‘Old Faith‘ schreef. Een mix van traditioneel georiënteerde muziek, begeleidt op akoestische instrumenten aangevuld met elektronica.

Het ensemble Arinushka werd opgericht in 1988 door Irena en Nikolay Zakharov. Naast het ensemble startten zij ook een muziekschool waar studenten les krijgen in Litouwse cultuur. Optredens volgen in het buitenland en de groep verleent zelfs hun medewerking aan twee Italiaanse films. Het repertoire bestaat uit traditionele stukken uit Litouwen en Wit-Rusland, zeer herkenbaar door de manier van zingen dat zich vaak rond een toon (de grondtoon) beweegt. De Litouwse componist Linas Rimša (1967) werd aangetrokken door het Pokrovskiye Kolokola Festival om nieuwe stukken te schrijven voor het ensemble Arinushka. Rimša is geïnspireerd door oude religieuze Russische gezangen en componeerde veertien stukken voor het folk ensemble die naadloos aansluiten bij de Litouwse traditie. We horen prachtige (soms meerstemmige) melodieën die hij arrangeerde met Keltische invloeden, West-Afrikaanse djembé, samples van khoomei, (boventoonzang uit Tuva), synthesizers, gitaar, allerlei fluiten en prachtige percussie. Een  mooie eigentijdse benadering met ontzag voor traditie. Jammer is soms het overdadig gebruik van strijkers die de muziek dicht smeert en zo nu en dan zelfs pathetisch overkomt. Maar de liedjes blijven fraai, de zang prachtig en de uitwerking uniek in zijn soort!

For years the ensemble Arinushka from Vilnius sings traditional music from Lithuania, one of the three Baltic States. The composer Linas Rimša recorded with the ensemble Arinushka fourteen pieces for the album ‘Old Faith‘. A mix of traditional orientated music accompanied on acoustic instruments added with electronics.

The ensemble Arinushka was established in 1988 by Irena en Nikolay Zakharov. Besides the ensemble they also started a music school for lessens in Lithuanian culture. Concerts were given abroad and the group assisted in two Italian films. The songs they sing come from Lithuania and Belarus, very recognizable how the melody floats around one tone (the tonica). The Lithuanian composer Linas Rimša (1967) was asked by the Pokrovskiye Kolokola Festival to write new songs for the ensemble Arinushka. He’s inspired by old Russian religious songs and composed fourteen new pieces, with a link to the Lithuanian tradition. We hear exciting (harmony) melodies arranged with Celtic influences, West-African djembé, samples of khoomei (overtone singing from Tuva), guitars, synthesizers, all kinds of flutes and beautiful percussion. A fine contemporary access with respect for tradition. A pity of the strings which are sometimes a little overloaded. But the songs are lovely, the singing splendid and the arrangements unique!
