Yom is een genie op de klarinet. Op zijn nieuwste album ‘The Empire Of Love’ voegt hij, net zoals op ‘With Love’ uit 2011, een flinke dosis synthesizers, strijkers en (elektronische) drums toe. Imponerende muziek voor de avontuurlijke muziekliefhebber die niet terugdeinst voor de opmerkelijke combinaties van deze New King of Klezmer.

Yom wordt geboren in Parijs in 1980. Als kleuter raakt hij al geïnteresseerd in de klarinet die hij, na een aantal jaren blokfluit, ook gaat bespelen. Mede door zijn Joodse achtergrond, raakt hij na zijn Conservatorium studie in Parijs, steeds meer geïnteresseerd in de klezmer: de Israëlische feestmuziek. Hij start zijn eigen band Orient Express Moving Shnorers (in 2001 Klezmer Nova) en gaat op zoek naar de innovatieve randen van deze Joodse muziek, die hij solo voortzet vanaf 2007. Bovendien brengt hij in 2008 het album ‘New King of Klezmer Clarinet’ uit, een hommage aan de legendarische Joodse klarinettist Naftule Brandwein (1884–1963).

Yom is een virtuoos op zijn instrument. Elke noot die hij speelt heeft een diepe klezemerlading, waardoor zijn instrument huilt vol weemoed maar ook glinstert van blijdschap. Maar dat is nog niet alles. Op ‘The Empire Of Love’ bouwt hij een spektakel van (analoge) synthesizer geluiden, strijkers, (computer)drums en vette bas sounds, af en toe aangevuld met de fonetische stem van Maya Mccallum. Deze begeleiding vormt een rijke voedingsbodem voor zijn innovatieve klarinetspel dat alle kanten opvliegt. Elektronisch geladen arrangementen geven de prachtig melancholische klarinet alle ruime waardoor deze excelleert en markant opvalt in zijn mechanische omgeving. Van het bijzonder gedragen ‘Angel‘ tot het springerige ‘Rebirth & Party’, steeds horen we Joodse muziek als een mist voorbij zweven. Voor wie zich openstelt voor deze Joodse weersverandering zal genieten van een tomeloze klezmer innovator.

Yom is a genius on clarinet. Like ‘With Love’ from 2011, we hear on his latest album ‘The Empire Of Love’ a lot of (electronic) drums, synthesizers and strings. Impressive music for the adventurous music lover.

Yom was born in Paris, 1980. As a young child he got interested in the clarinet which he began to play after a few years recorder. As a seventeen year old boy he finished his Conservatory study in Paris. Also because of his Jewish background he got interested in klezmer: the Israeli music. He started his band Orient Express Moving Shnorers (in 2001 Klezmer Nova) and got inspired by the cutting-edge Jewish music. In 2008 he released the album ‘New King of Klezmer Clarinet’. A homage to the legendary Jewish clarinet player Naftule Brandwein (1884–1963).

Yom is a virtuoso on his instrument. Every note he plays, is deeply klezmer loaded. His clarinet cries full of melancholy and shines full of joy. But there’s more. On ‘The Empire Of Love’ he built a spectacle of (analog) synthesizer sounds, strings, (electronic) drums and big bass’ added with the phonetic voice of Maya Mccallum. The music is a solid ground for the innovative clarinet sounds that moves all the way ‘round. Electronic loaded arrangements give the wonderful melancholic clarinet all the space to hit the music. From ‘Angel‘ to the jumpy ‘Rebirth & Party’, we still hear the Jewish music floating like a fog. Those who open their soul for the musical weather change, will enjoy this massive klezmer innovator.
