In 2005 richt Joan Garriga de groep La Troba Kung-Fú op. Tien jaar daarvoor is hij de zanger en accordeonist van Dusminguet, een Catalaanse band die de mestizo wereldkundig maakt. Een opzwepende mix van latin, salsa, ska, rock, punk en (elektronische) hiphop. La Troba Kung-Fú gaat door op min of meer dezelfde voet, maar heeft er een nieuwe naam voor bedacht ‘rúmbia’. ‘Santalegria’ is de vierde cd van La Troba Kung-Fú waarop het mestizo palet in een vrolijke ambiance voorbij vliegt. De groep klinkt als een gekruide stoofpot van Catalaanse rumba, Cubaanse son, merengue uit de Dominicaanse Republiek, salsa, texmex, reggae en Colombiaanse cumbia en vallenato. Een heerlijk smeuïg geheel. Opvallend is het prachtig (diatonische) accordeonspel van Joan Garriga dat sfeerbepalend is voor ‘Santalegria‘ waardoor de texmex, cumbia en vallenato nooit ver weg zijn. Hij zingt in het Spaans (en Engels) de korte pakkende melodietjes die soms wel erg eenvoudig zijn, maar als voordeel hebben dat je ze vrijwel meteen kunt meezingen. De cd klinkt bijzonder strak met gebruik van gitaren, toetsen en veel percussie waarbij de palma’s (handgeklap) lonken naar de flamenco. Net zoals de cd-titel ‘Santalegria’. Een samenvoegsel van ‘Santa’ (Heilige) en ‘Alegria’ (opgewekte flamenco), waarmee La Troba Kung-Fú de opzwepende trend voortzet die ze in 2005 zijn begonnen.

In 2005 Joan Garriga started the group La Troba Kung-Fú. Ten years before he was the leader of Dusminguet, a Catalan based mestizo band. They played an uplifting mix of latin, salsa, ska, rock, punk and (electronic) hiphop. La Troba Kung-Fú follows almost the same script, but calls it rúmbia.

‘Santalegria’ is La Troba Kung-Fú’s fouth album. The group sounds like a lovely stew of Catalan rumba, Cuban son, merengue from Dominican Republique, salsa, texmex, reggae and Colombian cumba and vallenato. A splendid juicy melange. Exciting is the wonderful (diatonic) accordion of Joan Garriga which is striking for the sound on ‘Santalegria‘ and keeps texmex, cumbia and vallenato in the background. He sings in Spanish (and English) short catchy melodies which are quite simple but makes you sing-a-long very easily. The album has a tight sound by the use of guitars, keys and a lot of percussion where the palma’s gives the music it’s flamenco flavour. Like the title ‘Santalegria’, where the words ‘Santa’ (Holy) and ‘Alegria’ (joyful flamenco) are put together. A lovely metaphor for La Troba Kung-Fú’s festive music which is a trend since their start in 2005.
