‘Travel Guide’ is het album van drie gitaristen; de Amerikaan Ralph Towner, de Oostenrijker Wolfgang Muthspiel en de in Kazachstan geboren maar in Oostenrijk opgegroeide Slava Grigoryan. Zij ontmoeten elkaar voor het eerst in 2005, gaven wereldwijd concerten en namen in 2009 hun debuut cd ‘From a dream’ op. ‘Travel Guide’ is het debuut album dat het trio opnam voor ECM Records.

‘Travel Guide’ (‘Reisgids’) is een absolute aanrader voor de gitaar muziek liefhebber. Drie gitaristen van formaat hebben elk hun specifieke kwaliteit die subliem samenkomt. Akoestisch gitarist Ralph Towner beweegt op de grens van jazz en folk. Een melodisch musicus die begin jaren ’80 de groep Oregon oprichtte, met o.a. bassist Glen Moore die we ook tegenkomen bij de Libanese ûd (Arabische luit) grootmeester Rabih Abou-Khalil. Jazz gitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel speelt elektrisch gitaar en voegt een flinke dosis Pat Metheny signatuur toe. Slava Grigoryan kleurt mooi met zijn bariton gitaar, met een warm gemêleerde klank. Het trio bedient zich van elektrische, akoestische en 12-snarige gitaren die elkaar naadloos aanvullen met melodieuze thema’s en solo’s. De muziek komt als een tokkelende golf over je heen. Je waant je in een ‘warm gitaar bad’ waar je aan alle kanten wordt gekieteld met fraai, uitgebalanceerde melodieën die je ontvoeren naar een muzikaal glooiend landschap. Maar dat is ook wel een gemis op ‘Travel Guide’. Nergens wordt dat landschap ruig of onherbergzaam. Nergens slaat de muziek om naar dissonante akkoorden of ritmes waar je wordt geleid langs diepe kloven en gevaarlijke watervallen. De muziek blijft lyrisch en zeker virtuoos met veel aandacht voor samenklank en harmonie. Eigenschappen die ‘Travel Guide’ zeker de moeite waard maakt en bovendien zeer toegankelijk.

‘Travel Guide’ is a wonderful album of three guitarists: the American Ralph Towner, the Austrian Wolfgang Muthspiel and the Kazakhstan born but Austrian raised Slava Grigoryan. They first met in 2005, gave concerts all over the world and recorded their début live album ‘Marnua’ in 2009. ‘Travel Guide’ is their first album on ECM Records.

‘Travel Guide’ is an absolute recommendation for guitar music lovers. Three virtuoso guitar players with their own specific quality. Acoustic Ralph Towner plays on the edge of jazz and folk. A melodic musician who started the band Oregon at the beginning of the 80’s., with bass player Glen Moore who recorded cd’s with oud (Arabic lute) master Rabih Abou-Khalil from Lebanon. Jazz guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel plays electric guitar with Pat Metheny flavour. The colour of Slava Grigoryan’s baritone guitar adds a mellow voice. The trio plays lovely theme’s and solo’s on electric, acoustic and 12-strings guitars, tight like a musical puzzle. The music is like a plucked wave through your ears. It feels like you’re in a ‘warm guitar bath‘, being tickled by splendid balanced melodies who kidnap you to a lovely landscape. But that’s also a missing piece on ‘Travel Guide’. There’s no wild nature with mountain cleaves and dangerous waterfalls that’s turns the music into dissonant chords and rhythms. The music is lyrical and virtuoso for sure, with al lot of attention for harmony and melody. That makes ‘Travel Guide’ a nice album and very accessible.
