De Finse pianist Iiro (Emil) Rantala maakte in het verleden zo’n zeven albums met zijn legendarische Trio Töykeät. In 2008 gaat hij solo verder en brengt nu samen met een celliste en een violist het album ‘Anyone with a heart’ uit. Waar Töykeät de energieke en soms humoristische virtuositeit opzocht, gaat Rantala nu juist terug naar de basis; waar melodie en thema’s centraal staan.

Iiro (Emil) Rantala (1970) studeerde aan het Kapylan Muziek Instituut en de Oulunkylä Pop & Jazz Academie. Maar het jazzballetje gaat pas echt rollen als hij in 1988 wordt toegelaten tot de jazzmuziekafdeling van de Sibelius Academie en in datzelfde jaar ook zijn Trio Töykeät opricht. Er volgen diverse cd’s, buitenlandse tournees en 1989 zijn debuut album. Daarnaast werkt hij ook als componist, schrijft een pianoconcert, koorwerk, trio voor piano, klarinet en viool en houdt zich bezig met musicals en popmuziek. Na Trio Töykeät brengt Rantala vanaf 2011 (solo)cd’s uit onder zijn eigen naam, waarbij ‘Anyone with a heart’ zijn derde is. Een trio-cd waarop hij wordt bijgestaan door celliste Asja Valcic en violist Adam Baldych. Een opmerkelijke combinatie die voor opmerkelijke muziek zorgt.

Iiro Rantala is een bevlogen pianist. Zijn spel is toegankelijk, vanzelfsprekend en ritmisch. Zeer melodische thema’s zijn bijna woordloze liedjes waarover hij bijzonder fraai soleert. Ontroerend filmische muziek, soms adembenemend mooi en, op één na, allemaal door hem gecomponeerd. De cello en viool ondersteunen zijn spel melodisch en zorgen voor een orkestrale sound waardoor de piano niet voortdurend op de voorgrond is. Daarnaast klinkt er zo nu en dan een stevige strijkerssolo, prachtig in ‘A little jazz tune‘ en ‘Hard score‘. Iiro Rantala gaat op ‘Anyone with a heart’ volledig terug naar de basis, naar de kern van de muziek om zo de luisteraar muzikaal bij de lurven te pakken. En dat is verdomd goed gelukt.

Iiro (Emil) Rantala is a Finish piano player who recorded seven albums with his legendary group Trio Töykeät. In 2008 he continued solo and recorded his third album ‘Anyone with a heart’ with a cello player and a violinist. So he returns back to the basics where melody is in the center of the music.

Iiro (Emil) Rantala (1970) studied at the Kapylan Music Institution and the Oulunkylä Pop & Jazz Academy. In 1988 he studied at the Sibelius Academy and initiated Trio Töykeät. He recorded his début album in 1989 (and seven more) and had foreign tours with this wonderful trio. Besides a piano player he’s also a composer. Wrote a piano concerto, piece for a choir, a trio for piano, clarinet and violin and composed musicals and pop music. After the break of Trio Töykeät in 2011, Rantala recorded three solo albums and ‘Anyone with a heart’ is the third. A trio album where he’s assisted by cello player Asja Valcic and violinist Adam Baldych. A remarkable combination for remarkable music.

Iiro Rantala is a passionate piano player. His music is accessible, self-evident and rhythmic. Very melodic theme’s are nearly wordless songs on which he variates beautiful. Catchy filming music, sometimes breath-taking, almost all composed by Rantala. The cello and the violin support the melodic piano and give an orchestral sound that makes the piano move from the front to the back. Besides all, the strings play wonderful solo’s in ‘A little jazz tune‘ en ‘Hard score‘. Iiro Rantala takes you with ‘Anyone with a heart’ back to the basics, back to the heart of the music, to make the audience listen very carefully to this moving music!
