Gitarist, componist en bandleider Marnix Busstra komt met een nieuwe groep in ‘standaard’ bezetting; bas, drums, piano en gitaar. Maar de uitwerking is allerminst ‘standaard’. Een coherente gezelschap van vier persoonlijke musici met ieder hun eigen melodisch verhaal dat prachtig synchroon samenkomt op ‘Sync Dreams’.

Marnix Busstra is een zeer karakteristiek gitarist die opvalt door zijn eigen stijl. Schrijft composities die ‘als vanzelf klinken’, met transparante melodieën en lucide akkoorden waarover hij met gemak en souplesse soleert. De stukken variëren: lyrisch, ritmisch, stuwend, hoekig met als slot een soort blues. Busstra is duidelijk geïnspireerd door Pat Metheny (Earth Tone) en John Scofield maar gaat toch geheel zijn eigen weg. Gedreven, virtuoos en zonder overbodige noten. Vooral de elementaire rust die de muziek uitstraalt, is opmerkelijk. Hoe druk sommige passages ook zijn, je wordt als luisteraar meegenomen door een muzikaal verhalen verteller die nog lang niet is uitgesproken. In twee nummers gaat hij zelfs op zoek naar nieuwe klankkleuren waar hij, door het gebruik van bouzouki en sitar, de muziek een Oosters tintje geeft. Hij wordt bijgestaan door multi pianist Rembrandt Frerichs, subliem begeleider die bijzonder fraai soleert in ‘Down, and Up Again’ en ‘Octoforce’ waarbij hij poly ritmisch wordt ondersteund door Pieter Bast. Een drummer die schildert met percussie en zijn spel lardeert met ‘ghost notes’ wat het geheel nog swingender maakt. Marnix Busstra maakte cd’s met zijn band’s: Second Vision, Marnix Busstra 4-Tet, Buzz Bros Band en twee cd’s met meester vibrafonist Mike Mainieri. Daar wordt nu het prachtige ‘Sync Dreams‘ aan toegevoegd. Het debuut van zijn nieuwe band Marnix Busstra Band waarmee weer een droom werkelijkheid wordt.

Guitar player, composer and bandleader Marnix Busstra formed a new standard group: bass, drums, piano en guitar. But the result isn’t standard at all. We hear a coherent ensemble of four personal musicians who tell their own melodic story, synchronized on ‘Sync Dreams‘.

Marnix Busstra is a wonderfull characteristic guitarist, who’s got a striking musical style. He writes compositions which sounds so familiar, with open melodies and sparkling harmonies on which he easily plays his solo’s. Varied pieces: lyrical, rhythmical and edgy with a kind of blues at the end. Busstra is inspired by Pat Metheny (Earth Tone) and John Scofield, that’s obvious, but he still goes his own, personal way. Passionate, virtuose without overflowing notes. He keeps the elementairy calmness in his music, that’s really remarkable. He’s a story teller, with a lot to tell. In two songs he’s even looking for new musical colors by using the bouzouki and the sitar which gives the music a Eastern sound. He’s accompanied by multi pianist Rembrandt Frerichs, excellent player with a fresh solo sound in ‘Down, and Up Again’ and ‘Octoforce’, poly rhythmic assisted by Pieter Bast. A drummer who’s painting with percussion by using inspiring ‘ghosts-notes‘ for more musical exposure. Marnix Busstra recorded cd’s with his bands: Second Vision, Marnix Busstra 4-Tet, Buzz Bros Band and tow albums with master vibraphone player Mike Mainieri. On this list we can add the wonderful ‘Sync Dreams’. The debut of the Marnix Busstra Band, where dreams come true!
