De in Frankrijk geboren Nederlandse Franse flamenco gitarist Alain Labrie draait al heel wat jaren mee in de nationale muziekwereld: Les Charmeurs, Da Gaia en Luzazul. Met zijn solo project Labryénco presenteerde hij in september 2013 de tweede cd ‘La Penúltima’ (‘de voor laatste’). Een veelzijdig flamenco album met de gitaar als middelpunt.

Alain Labrie is een componist die houdt van duidelijke melodieën. Niet dat ze voor de hand liggen, zeker niet. Je wordt meegenomen in een labyrint van muzikale hoeken en bochten die het flamenco perspectief aanzienlijk verbreden. Zo opent de cd met een schitterende duduk (Armeense hobo) bijdrage van Koen de Gans die de muziek een prachtig serene, bijna sacrale dubbele lading geeft. Iets wat overigens ook geldt voor de viool (weinig te horen binnen de flamenco signatuur) die rust brengt naast het ritmisch gitaar- en percussie spel. Labrie is een gedreven muzikant die markant gebruik maakt van dynamiek en frasering wat overigens ook tot uitting komt in de muziek als geheel, waarbij hij glissando’s (glijdende tonen) en arpeggio’s (gebroken akkoorden) fraai boven de muziek uit tilt. Flamenco zanger Carlos Denia (1971-Valencia), die sinds 1995 in Nederland woont, zingt een aantal stukken op ‘La Penúltima’: het titelstuk zelfs in een Madagascarese meerstemmigheid. Hij heeft een krachtig overtuigende stem: fantastisch in ‘Hades’ waar hij in het slot wordt aangevuld door een gitaar/viool thema waardoor de muziek vervreemdend klinkt. Opmerkelijk is ook de flagrante bas sound van Franklin Heilijgers die prachtig gebruik maakt van flageolet tonen: het spelen van de eerste ‘boventoon’ waardoor de bas een octaaf hoger klinkt. ‘La Penúltima’ is het beste wat Labrie tot nu toe heeft gemaakt, waarbij we ervan uit gaan dat dit niet zijn ‘voorlaatste‘ cd zal zijn!

The French born flamenco guitarist Alain Labrie lives for years now in the Netherlands and plays with several groups in the national music scene: Les Charmeurs, Da Gaia and Luzazul. In September 2013 he came up with the second album ‘La Penúltima’ (‘penultimate’) of his band Labryénco. A fresh flamenco album with guitar in the center.

Alain Labrie is a composer who loves clear melodies. Not predictable, not at all. You will be carried away in a labyrinth of musical corners and bends which improve the flamenco music. The cd opens with a wonderful duduk (Armenian oboe), played by Koen de Gans. This gives the music a beautiful serene, almost sacred double exposure. The same like the violin (less used in the flamenco music) that brings some rest alongside the rhythmic guitars and percussion. Labrie is a passionate musician capable to use striking and dynamic arrangements. He puts the glissandi (gliding tones) and the arpeggio’s (broken chords) clearly above the music. Flamenco singer Carlos Denia (1971-Valencia), who lives in the Netherlands since 1995, sings a few songs on ‘La Penúltima’. He has a powerful and persuasive voice: fantastic in the end of ‘Hades’ where you’re carried away by a guitar/violin theme and the voice on top, imaging a double spectrum. Remarkable as well is the clear bass sound of Franklin Heilijgers. He sometimes uses the wonderful flageolet: playing the first ‘overtone’ which makes the bass one octave higher. ‘La Penúltima’ is the best Labrie ever came up with and lets hope it’s not his penultimate!
