De nieuwe cd ‘Sketches of Ethiopia’ van de Ethiopische jazz musicus Mulatu Astatke refereert aan de in 1960 uitgebrachte L.P. ‘Sketches of Spain’ van Miles Davis en Gil Evans. Net zoals Davis verwijst de muziek naar een land: in het geval van Astatke naar zijn geboorteland Ethiopië. Astatke is dan wel 70 jaar maar met zijn Steps Ahead Band (ook weer een verwijzing) speelt hij een vitale Ethiopische jazz fusie.

Zelden een Afrikaanse jazz cross-over plaat gehoord die zo vernuft en ingenieus in elkaar zit als de nieuwe cd van Mulatu Astatke, de legendarische vader van Ethio-jazz. Studeerde muziek in jaren ’60 in Engeland en Amerika, werkte mee met de Ethiopiques Series en gaf concerten met Either/Orchestra en het Londen’s muziekcollectief The Heliocentrics. ‘Sketches of Ethiopia’ is een avontuurlijke cd. De muziek is complex, vol ritmische verrassingen en onvoorspelbaar, maar toch heel toegankelijk en sympathiek. En vooral zo cool en gedoseerd gespeeld. Doordrenkt van Ethiopische thema’s, blazerspartijen (prachtig in Assosa Derache) en percussie klinkt strakke muziek, waarin virtuoos wordt gesoleerd door blazers en de meester zelf op vibrafoon. Enkele nummers worden gezongen door de Ethiopische zanger Tesfaye en het slotnummer door de Malinese zangeres Fatoumata Diawara. ‘Sketches of Ethiopia’ werd opgenomen in de Ethiopische hoofdstad Addis-Ababa, Londen en in de buurt van Avignon, Zuid-Frankrijk. De cd is een grote Ethiopische ontdekkingsreis die zowel de jazz als de Afrikaanse muziekliefhebber zal aanspreken.

The new cd ‘Sketches of Ethiopia’ of the Ethiopian musician Mulatu Astatke refers to ‘Sketches of Spain’ of Miles Davis and Gil Evans from 1960. Like Davis’s album this music refers to a country. In this case of Astatke to his homeland Ethiopia. Allthough he’s 70 years old, with his Steps Ahead Band (also a reference) he plays a vital Ethiopian jazz fusion.

Rarely I heard such a ingenious jazz cross-over record like the new cd of Mulatu Astatke, the legendary father of Ethio-jazz. Studied in the sixties in England and Amerika, worked for Ethiopiques Series and gave concerts with the Either/Orchestra and the London’s music collective The Heliocentrics. ‘Sketches of Ethiopia’ is an adventurous cd. The music is complex, full of rhythmic surprises and unpredictable, but still very accessible and sympathetic. Played very cool and measured. Tight music, full of Ethiopian theme’s, brass sections (wonderful in ‘Assosa Derache’) and percussion added with lovely solo’s by brass and vibraphone played by the master himself. A few songs are sung by the Ethiopian singer Tesfaye and the final song by Fatoumata Diawara, a striking singer from Mali.‘Sketches of Ethiopia’ was recorded in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa, London and near Avignon, Southern France. The cd is a splendid Ethiopian musical trip which will please the jazz and African music lover.
