De cd ‘¡Saoco! Vol 2 – Bomba, plena roots of salsa in Puerto Rico 1955-1967′ biedt een mooi overzicht van de nog pure versies van de bomba en plena uit Puerto Rico zoals die te horen waren voor de salsa explosie van jaren ’70 in New York. Deze cd is een aanvulling op de dubbelaar die in 2012 verscheen met muziek uit min of meer dezelfde periode.

De bomba en plena zijn twee stijlen uit Puerto Rico, een eiland dat veel kleiner is dan de Dominicaanse Republiek en Cuba. De bomba is van Afrikaanse afkomst en ontstaan op de suikerplantages rondom de steden San Juan (noorden) en Ponce in het zuiden. De muziekstijl heeft een zeer beweeglijk karakter met gesyncopeerde baslijn (niet óp de tel). De plena daarentegen heeft een Spaanse achtergrond met een rechte baslijn en is ‘vierkanter’ van ritme. Aan beiden stijlen wordt in de ’70-er jaren in New York de Amerikaanse big band muziek toegevoegd en vormen zo de basis voor de salsa.

Op ‘¡Saoco! Bomba, plena roots of salsa in Puerto Rico 1955-1967′ vinden we de pure bomba en plena terug, gespeeld op pandereta (tamboerijn), bongo, conga, guiro (rasp) gitaar en de cuatro (lijkt op de Cubaanse tres), en later de piano in de plena’s van Manuel Jiménez (el Canario 1895-1975). Een muzikant die de piano en blazers introduceerde in de jaren ’50 en de muziek rijker maakte waarbij de blazers prachtige interludes spelen maar ook vraag-en-antwoord met de zang. ‘¡Saoco! is een fraaie collectie in een kartonnen hoesje met een boekje vol artiest beschrijvingen van o.a Ismael Santiago die de accordeon toevoegde, Cortijo y su Combo met zanger Ismael Rivera en de koning van jibera (land) traditie Ramito. ‘¡Saoco! Bomba, plena roots of salsa in Puerto Rico 1955-1967′ is een bonte verzameling uit een tijdperk dat de salsa nog moest worden ontwikkeld, maar de muziek swingt er niet minder om!

The cd ‘¡Saoco! Vol 2 – Bomba, plena roots of salsa in Puerto Rico 1955-1967′ gives a wonderful overview of the pure and integral bomba and plena from Puerto Rico, before the salsa explosion of the ’70’s. This cd is a supplement to the double-cd which was release in 2012 with music from the same period. More info (in Dutch) you’ll find it here.

The bomba and plena are two musical styles from Puerto Rico, an island much smaller than the Dominican Republic or Cuba. The bomba, with African roots, is very rhythmic with a syncopated bass line. The plena is more tight and square with a Spanish background and a straight bass line. Both styles are the basics for the salsa music from the ’70’s, added to the American big band music in New York.

On the wonderful cd ‘¡Saoco! Bomba, plena roots of salsa in Puerto Rico 1955-1967′ we’ll find the pure bomba and plena, played on pandereta (tambourine) , bongo, conga, guiro, guitar and cuatre (like the Cuban tres), and later the piano in the plena’s of Manuel Jiménez (el Canario 1895-1975). A musician who added the piano and brass in the ’50’s which makes the music richer. The brass played wonderful interludes with call-and-response with the lead vocal. The result is ‘¡Saoco!, a lovely collection in a cardboard sleeve with a small book with info of the artists. Like Ismael Santiago who added the accordion, Cortijo y su Combo with vocalist Ismael Rivera and the king of the jibara (country) tradition Ramito. ‘¡Saoco! Bomba, plena roots of salsa in Puerto Rico 1955-1967′ is a fresh compilation of songs from an pre-salsa era, with very contagious music!
