‘Reflective’ is het nieuwe solo album van de Nederlandse pianist Michiel Borstlap. Een muzikale weerspiegeling waar melodie eigenzinnig reflecteert in diverse muziekstijlen. Borstlap gaat terug naar de basis: daar waar klank en harmonie in de kiem wordt geboren en de melodie zich organisch ontwikkelt tot breekbare bouwwerken.

Michiel Borstlap is gevierd (jazz)pianist/componist en brengt bijna jaarlijks een cd op de markt. ‘Reflective’ is zijn derde solo-album waarmee hij zijn 25-jarig jubileum markeert. De cd straalt rust uit, is sereen en soms mijmerend. We horen een prachtige balans tussen harmonie en melodie. Borstlap besteedt veel aandacht aan de uitvoering met een scherp touché waarmee hij zorgvuldig zijn noten kiest. Hij laat zich leiden door verschillende stijlen. Zo klinkt klassieke muziek in ‘I Wrote a Song’ (Schubert) en ‘Reflective’ (Chopin), horen we in ‘Waterfall’ en ‘Happy Tears’ minimalistische elementen (Wim Mertens), is ‘Always in the Night‘ een beknopte folk weerkaatsing terwijl hij in ‘Steppin’ Up’ terugkijkt naar de jazz. Steeds heel subtiel en bijna ongrijpbaar met melodieën die nét even anders gaan dan je verwacht waarbij zelfs het liedje ‘Birds’ (van Anouk) klinkt als nooit tevoren. De muziek op ‘Reflective’ spreekt voor zich, heeft een grote muzikale lading die in twee stukken onnodig wordt aangedikt door het Metropool Orkest. Maar gelukkig heeft de cd zich dan allang bewezen.

‘Reflective’ is the new solo album of the Dutch pianist Michiel Borstlap. A musical reflection where melodies diosyncratic shines in several styles. Borstlap goes back to the basics: where sound and harmony are born and the melody organic develops into a fragile masterpiece.

Michiel Borstlap is a celebrated (jazz)pianist/composer and ‘Reflective’ is his thirth solo album which marks his 25-years jubilee. De cd emits quietness, is serene and sometimes dreamy. We hear a wonderful balance between harmony and melody. Michiel Borstlap pays a lot of attention to his accomplishment, played with an intense touché and accurate chosen notes. He’s inspired by several musical styles. Like classical music in ‘I Wrote a Song’ (Schubert) and ‘Reflective’ (Chopin). We hear elements of minimal music (Wim Mertens) in ‘Waterfall’ and ‘Happy Tears’ and a folk concise in ‘Always in the Night‘, while ‘Steppin’ Up’ brings us back to jazz music. Very subtle and almost untouchable with unexpected melodies in which the Dutch hit song ‘Birds’ (by Anouk) sounds like you’ve never heard before. The music on ‘Reflective’ is evident, unnecessary thicken by the Metropole Orchestra. Fortunately the cd proved itself already!
