De Iraanse zangeres Marjan Vahdat nam al eerder deel aan projecten samen met haar oudere zus Masha, waaronder ‘Lullabies from the Axis of Evil’, ‘Songs from a Persian Garden’, ‘I am Eve’ en ‘Twinklings of Hope’. De cd ‘Blue Fields’ is haar debuut, waarop Marjan Vahdat te horen is in nieuw gecomponeerde stukken op eeuwenoude gedichten: o.a. van de Sufi dichter Rumi (13de eeuw).

Marjan Vahdat (1976) wordt geboren in Teheran en studeerde piano, tar (3-snarig instrument) en zang o.a. bij Sima Bina (1944): een zangeres die opgroeide binnen de klassieke en traditionele Iraanse zang. Bina was de eerste zangeres die optrad in Europa en de V.S. sinds de revolutie van eind jaren ’70. Marjan Vahdat is net zoals haar zus Masha een wereldwijde vertegenwoordiger van de Iraanse muziek. Op de uitgebrachte cd’s brengen ze de Iraanse muziekcultuur dichter bij de westerse luisteraar. Iets soortgelijks gebeurt op ‘Blue Fields’ waarop Marjan Vahdat Iraanse, maar ook Koerdische en een Azeri lied uit Azerbeidzjan zingt. Ze heeft een soepele en elastische stem met een expressief karakter. Haar Iraanse signatuur klinkt als vanzelfsprekend waarbij de stem regelmatig wisselt tussen borst en kopstem; een techniek die ze perfect beheerst. Nummers als ‘Stately Cypress’, ‘Rooted in You’ en ‘Tazarv’ betoveren met een kristalheldere uitvoering. ‘Blue Fields’ heeft een religieus karakter dat door de sobere instrumentatie van ney (fluit), contrabas, kamanche (strijkinstrument) en percussie nog eens wordt benadrukt. De cd werd opgenomen in de Olai Petrus kapel op de Sigtuna Foundation in Sigtuna in Zweden: ver van Iran waar vrouwenzang in het openbaar nog steeds verboden is.

The Iranian singer Marjan Vahdat recorded several cd’s with her older sister Masha like: ‘Lullabies from the Axis of Evil’, ‘Songs from a Persian Garden’, ‘I am Eve’ and ‘Twinklings of Hope’. The cd ‘Blue Fields’ is Marjan’s debut, on which we hear her in new composed songs on century old poems: like the Sufi poet Rumi (13th century).

Marjan Vahdat (1976) was born in Teheran and studied piano, tar (3 stringed instrument) and singing: taught by Sima Bina (1944). A singer, grown up with classical and traditional music. Bina was the first singer who gave concerts in Europe and the U.S. since the revolution at the end of the ’70’s. Marjan Vahdat  is like her sister Masha a world wide exponent of the Iranian music. The cd’s they recorded gave the western audience a wonderful view of the Iranian singing culture; also found on the cd ‘Blue Fields’. Marjan sings Iranian songs as well as Kurdish and Azeri from Azerbeidzjan. She performs with a flexible and elastic voice with a wonderful expression. Her Iranian signature sounds self-evident: she easily moves her voice in resonating singing between the low- and head-voice. ‘Stately Cypress’, ‘Rooted in You’ and ‘Tazarv’ are absolute enchanting songs and sung with a crystal clear voice. ‘Blue Fields’ got a religious character and played with sober instrumentation: ney (flute), double bass, kamanche (spike-fiddle) and percussion. The cd was recorded in the Olai Petrus chappell at the Sigtuna Foundation in Sigtuna in Zweden: far away from Iran were woman are not allowed to sing in public.
