Galicië is een zeer muzikaal stukje Europa waar bijzondere Keltische muziek vandaan komt. Deze groene Spaanse provincie ligt ten noorden van Portugal, met als hoofdstad de bedevaartplaats Santiago de Compostella. In de lente van 2013 bracht gaita (doedelzak) en fluit speler Budiño zijn nieuwe cd ‘Sotaque’ uit, waarmee hij bewijst dat de Galicische muziek volop in ontwikkeling is.

‘Sotaque’ is de zesde cd van (Xosé Manuel) Budiño, opgenomen in zijn privé studio en nabewerkt in de ‘Atlântico Blue Studio’ in Lissabon. Budiño studeerde gaita (doedelzak) aan de ‘Semente Nova’ in Moaña en aan de Universiteit van Vigo en speelt naast gaita ook fluit. In zijn muziek vinden we de typische Galicische kenmerken terug: de folk tonaliteit, unisono samenzang (van oorsprong door vrouwen, bij Budiño door mannen) begeleidt op de pandereito (kleine tamboerijn) zoals in het stuk ‘Riamonte’ samen met de groep Cantareiros de o Fiadeiro. We horen de fluit en natuurlijk de gaita, die door Budiño meesterlijk wordt bespeeld en waaraan hij zijn bekendheid te danken heeft. Allemaal kenmerken die de cd een heerlijk Galicisch karakter geeft. ‘Sotaque’ is een gevarieerde cd, soms iets meer folk, soms iets meer pop. Een variatie die wél met zich mee brengt dat niet elk nummer even sterk is. Logisch, maar erg is dat allerminst. Budiño begrijpt de kunst van het componeren, arrangeren, het prachtig subtiel toevoegen van elektronica en het mengen van popmuziek in zijn composities. Helaas is de zang ietwat ondergewaardeerd en wordt één stuk zelfs gezongen door Portugese fado zanger Antonio Zambujo. Op zich een mooie stem maar hij mist de typische Galicische kleur die bijvoorbeeld Uxia of Ialma wel in huis hebben, wat overigens ook geldt voor Luis Tosar die ‘Hoxe canto en Libertá’ zingt. ‘Sotaque’ betekent ‘accent’, gerelateerd aan de Galicische muziek die als een watermerk hoorbaar blijft, want daar is de muziek uit deze prachtige Spaanse provincie te kenmerkend voor.

Galicia is wonderful province of Europe where you’ll find remarkable Celtic music. It lies in the North West of Spain with capital the pilgrimage city Santiago de Compostella. In spring of 2013 Budiño released his new cd ‘Sotaque’, which is a demonstration of Galician music in progress.

‘Sotaque’ is (Xosé Manuel) Budiño’s sixth cd, recorded in his private studio and edited in the ‘Atlântico Blue Studio’ in Lisbon. Budiño studied gaita at the ‘Semente Nova’ in Moaña and at University of Vigo. Besides gaita he plays flute as well. In his music you’ll find the typical Galician sound: the folk scales, unisono voicing (origin by woman, but Budiño use male voices), accompanied by the pandereito (litte tambourin) like the composition ‘Riamonte’ together with Cantareiros de o Fiadeiro. We hear the flute and off course the gaita, played wonderful by Budiño, which gave him his star rate. ‘Sotaque’ is a varied cd, sometimes more folk: sometimes more pop music. That’s makes not every song even intense. But that’s no problem, Budiño knows how to compose, arrange, add subtle electronics and mix pop music in his compositions. It’s a pity that only a few pieces were sung and one even by the Portuguese fado singer Antonio Zambujo. A wonderful voice, indeed, but he misses the typical Galician voice color like Uxia or Ialma. Moreover like  Luis Tosar who sings ‘Hoxe canto en Libertá’.  ‘Sotaque’ means ‘accent’, related to the Galician music which is like a watermark constantly in the music: for sure, because the music of this Spain’s wonderful Galicia is very remarkable.
