Trompettist Ibrahim Maalouf (1980) wordt geboren in Beirut, de hoofdstad van Libanon. Vanwege de burgeroorlog ontvlucht hij met zijn ouders zijn geboorteland en woont jarenlang in een buitenwijk van Parijs. In de lente van 2013 verschijnt de cd-box ‘DIA’, met zijn eerste drie cd’s: ‘Diasporas’, ‘Diachronism’ (2-cd) en ‘Diagnostic’.

Als kind droomt Ibrahim Maalouf van een carriere als architect, om het kapotgeschoten Libanon opnieuw op te bouwen. Een droom die hij uiteindelijk vertaald naar zijn trompet en een brug slaat tussen de Arabische en Westerse muziek. Hij luistert naar Oum Khaltoum, Bach, Mozart en Mahler. Maar ook naar Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie en allerlei pop, hip-hop en rock muziek. Hij is de zoon van Nassim Maalouf, die studeerde bij de Frans klassieke trompettist Maurice André. Deze spoort Ibrahim Maalouf aan om ook trompet te spelen en te gaan studeren aan het Parijs Conservatorium. Aanvankelijk speelt hij alleen klassiek repertoire maar kiest uiteindelijk voor de jazz en geïmproviseerde muziek. Hij neemt zijn debuut cd ‘Diasporas’ op in 2007. Een Oriëntaals georiënteerd album waar hij creatief gebruik maakt van elektronica aangevuld met akoestische instrumenten zoals o.a. de ney (herdersfluit), de kanun (citer), ûd (Arabische luit) viool, cello en Arabische percussie. Bijzonder fraaie cd waar hij inventief de Arabische toonladders mengt met de westerse en zijn trompet voorziet van een extra ventiel voor het spelen van de Oriëntaalse tonen.

Op zijn 2de cd ‘Diachronism’ benadert Maalouf de Arabische tonaliteit losser, waardoor deze dubbel-cd een stuk westerser klinkt dan zijn voorganger. Hij wordt bijgestaan door een aantal vooraanstaande musici waaronder de ûd speler Adrian Jubran, de legendarische percussionist Bijan Chemirani en pianist Jacky Terasson. Een (westerse) ontwikkeling die hij voortzet op zijn 3de cd ‘Diagnostic’. Volledig akoestisch opgenomen en waar we een Maalouf horen die lyrischer en melodischer is, maar ook theatraler. Klassiek, Balkan, jazz, pop en rock verschijnen achter elkaar en laten een veelzijdig musicus horen.

De muziek voor zijn laatste cd ‘Wind’ componeerde hij in jazz kwartet bezetting voor de zwijgende film ‘La Proie du Vent’ (Prooi Van De Wind) uit 1926 van René Clair (1898-1981). Kilk hier voor een review van dit laatste album.

Trumpet player Ibrahim Maalouf (1980) was born in Beirut (Libanon). With his parents he moved to Paris because of the war. In the spring of 2013, the cd-box ‘DIA’ was released with his first three cd’s ‘Diasporas’, ‘Diachronism’ (2-cd) and ‘Diagnostic’.

As a child Ibrahim Maalouf dreamt about being an architect to rebuilt Libanon. A dream who will ends up in music in which Maalouf composes a bridge between Arabic and Western music. He listens to Oum Khaltoum, Bach, Mozart and Mahler. But also to Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie and all kinds of pop, hip-hop and rock music. He’s the son of Nassim Maalouf, who studied with the French classic trumpet player Maurice André. He stimulates Ibrahim Maalouf  to study trumpet as well and go to the Conservatory of Paris. At first he only played classical repertoire but after all, he choose for jazz and improvised music. He recorded his debut ‘Diasporas’ in 2007. An Oriental flavoured album on which he’s very creative with electronics add with acoustic recorded instruments like the ney (flute), kanun (citer), oud (Arabic lute), violin, cello and Arabic percussion. Extremely exciting are the Arabic tone scales mixed up with western tonality. His trumpet got an extra air-vlave to play the Arabic tones.

His second album ‘Diachronism’ Maalouf is more free in Arabic tonality, which makes this double-cd more Western-like than his debut. There are a few outstanding musicians who play on this record, like oud player Adrian Jubran, the legendary percussionist Bijan Chemirani and pianist Jacky Terasson. This western acess keeps on going to his 3th cd Diagnostic’, which is recorded acoustic. Maalouf is more lyrical and melodic, but also more theatrical. Classical, Balkan, jazz, pop and rock appear after each other and show a wonderful and multilateral musician.

The music of his last cd ‘Wind’ was composed for jazz quartet for the silent movie ‘La Proie du Vent’ (Prey of the Wind) from 1926 of René Clair (1898-1981). Click here for a review of this album (in Dutch).
