Het Orchestra Bailam combineert oosterse invloeden met de Noord Italiaanse trallalero: fonetisch a capella gezongen liederen ontstaan begin 20ste eeuw in Ligurië. In de havens van Genua zongen mannen, havenarbeiders, de tra-la-le-ro liederen, verdeeld over drie stemmen: bas, baritone en tenor waarbij een stem de tremolo imiteert van de gitaar.

De groep Orchestra Bailam wordt opgericht in 1989. Vanaf midden jaren ’90 verwerkt dit gezelschap Balkan, klezmer, Arabische en Griekse invloeden in hun muziek. Dat is op hun laatste cd ‘Galata’ niet anders. Bovendien is Orchestra Bailam een samenwerking aangegaan met Compagnia di Canto Trallalero, een Noord Italiaanse groep die de trallalero zingt met ‘slechts’ drie vocalisten in plaats van negen. De combinatie van Orchestra Bailam, met zijn Orientaalse en Balkan invloeden, samen met de de trallalero is uiterst curieus, maar daardoor juist heel uniek. Het resultaat brengt een ietwat schizofrene kleur waarbij de trallalero hier en daar komt binnen zweven en zorgt voor een heel nieuw en prettig touché. De onregelmatige maatsoorten, de Arabische tonaliteit en het gebruik van Oosterse instrumenten zoals de darbuka (vaastrommel) en de Griekse baglama geven Orchestra Bailam zijn eigen identiteit die door Compagnia di Canto Trallalero weer wordt teruggehaald naar Noord Italië. Op deze manier verplaatst ‘Galata’ zich binnen enkele nummers, enkele honderden kilometers. Hierdoor wordt Europa muzikaal weliswaar een stukje kleiner, maar ook een stuk rijker!

The Orchestra Bailam was united in 1989. From the mid ‘90’s the group uses influences from Balkan, klezmer, Arabic and Greek music as well as they do on their last album ‘Galata’. Orchestra Bailam collaborates with the Compagnia di Canto Trallalero, a North Italian group which sings the (a capella) trallalero songs. This way of singing started from the begining of the 20th century in the harbours of Genua where workers sing this 3-harmonic-music. Compagnia di Canto Trallalero use only three voices/singers, in stead of the original nine. The combination of Orchestra Bailam, with their Oriental and Balkan influences and the trallalero songs, is very curious. The result brings a little schizophrenic musical colour. It seems like the trallalero is floating into the music, but finally brings a wonderfull mixing flavour. The irregular beats, the Arabic tonality and the use of the darabuka (Oriental trom) and the baglama (Greek string instrument) gives the music of Orchestra Bailam her own (Eastern) identity while Compagnia di Canto Trallalero takes it back to the North of Italy. On this manner ‘Galata’ moves within a few songs, a hundred kilometers and makes Europe a little smaller, but a lot richer!
