Het duo ArHai bestaat uit zangeres en keyboard speler Jovana Backovic en Adrian Lever die de tambura bespeeld. In een elektronische ambiance, aangevuld met samples, laat het duo een Balkan georïenteerde muziek horen. Deze speelt zich veelal af rond Zuid Bulgarije, waar de tambura (snaarinstrument) vandaan komt.

De muziek van ArHai (De Bron) valt op door de Bulgaarse signatuur: de onregelmatige maatsoorten (Beneath the Tree), de samples van de typische Bulgaarse vrouwenkoren met de snijdende harmonieën (Peregrinus) en het gebruik van de tambura, de Bulgaarse bouzouki. Hiermee krijgt de muziek een Bulgaarse flavour zoals die bijvoorbeeld prachtig ter horen is in Dance of the Bacchants.

Maar het is toch vooral de stem van Jovana Backovic die ‘Eastern Roads‘ tot een succes maakt. De arrangementen zitten weliswaar vol elektronische beats, (waardoor de muziek af en toe wat mechanisch overkomt), maar de stem van Backovic zorgt voor een natuurlijke warmte en kleur. Zij heeft een heldere stem die fraai uitblinkt in (non-)vibrato intense meerstemmigheid. Te vergelijken met de Griekse zangeres Savina Yannatou. Het Sefardische lied Morena en de afsluiter Jasmine zijn regelrechte parels in een nieuw moderne glans. Het enerverende tambura spel van Adrian Lever zorgt voor een Bulgaarse teint die door het hele album laveert. ArHai wordt aangevuld met enkele gastmusici op tabla, percussie en elektrische bas en biedt, in tegenstelling wat het herfstachtige hoesje doet vermoeden, een optimistisch melancholisch album waar de zon met gemak door de wolken breekt!

Singer and keyboard player Jovana Backovic is one part of ArHai. The other is Adrian Lever who plays the tambura. In an electronic ambiance, added with samples, the duo plays a Balkan (Bulgarian) oriënted folk music. The music of ArHai (The Source) is remarkable because of it’s Bulgarian flair: the typical Bulgarian rhythmes (Beneath the Tree), the women choir samples with their sliced harmonies (Peregrinus) and the use of the tambura, the Bulgarian bouzouki. But the most remarkable is the voice of Backovic, which gives the music it’s natural warmth and colour. She has a fragile voice with a (non-)vibrato intense harmonie, comparable with the Greek singer Savina Yannatou. The Sefardic song Morena and the last Jasmine are pearls and sounds great. The exciting tambura of Adrian Lever gives the album it’s Bulgarian touch throughout the cd added with guests musicians on tabla, percussions and electric bass. ‘Eastern Roads’ offers, in compare to what the autumn-cover implifies, an optimistic and melancholic album, where the sun easily break through a cloudy sky!
