‘Turning Back‘ is de debuut-cd van de jonge Egyptische zangeres Dina el Wedidi (1987) uit Cairo. Qua stijl sluit ze aan bij de Tunesische Souad Massi of de Palestijnse Rim Banna. Wedidi is een opmerkelijk singer-song writer die muziek schreef op poëzie van Egyptische dichters en zelf  gitaar en daf (frame trommel) speelt bijgestaan door een volledige band.

Dina el Wedidi wordt geboren in Giza, Noord Egypte en studeert Oriëntaalse (Turks en Perzisch) literatuur in Cairo. Na haar studie werkt ze enkele jaren als gids. Als ze in 2008 meewerkt met een theaterproductie van het El Warsha Theater Troupe, ontdekt ze de impact van muziek. Ze besluit haar eigen weg te gaan en richt een begeleidingsband op. Bovendien werkt ze samen met de Braziliaanse musicus Gilberto Gil, met wie ze het lied ‘The Night‘ zingt, te vinden op dit album. Op ‘Turning Back‘ staat Egypte centraal. Dina el Wedidi zingt integer over de verdwenen toekomst, het onrecht of de liefde. Haar stem lijkt op die van de legendarische Palestijnse zangeres Rim Banna die met een zelfde bevlogenheid zingt over misstanden in haar land. Tegen een Arabische achtergrond en westerse melodieën klinkt de muziek zeer toegankelijk met in het openingsstuk ‘Fi Belad El Agayeb (In Wonderland)’ en ‘Hozn El Ganoub‘ een Ethiopische kleur. Prachtig is de combi van Oriëntaalse en westerse instrumenten, organisch gearrangeerd door violiste Nancy Mounir. Naast een gastoptreden van Giberto Gil horen we in ‘Dawayer‘ de vrouwen zanggroep Mazaher, die van origine zichzelf ritmisch begeleiden tijdens rituele bijeenkomsten. Dina el Wedidi is een Egyptische zangeres van de toekomst die met ‘Turning Back‘ het verleden achter zich laat.

‘Turning Back’ is the debut album by the young Egyptian singer Dina el Wedidi (1987) from Cairo. Like the Tunisian Souad Massi or the Palestinian Rim Banna, Wedidi is a remarkable singer-song writer who wrote music to poetry by Egyptian poets and accompany herself on guitar and daf (frame drum) assisted by a full band.

Dina el Wedidi was born in Giza, Northern Egypt and studied Oriental (Turkish and Persian) literature in Cairo. After her studies she worked several years as a tourist guide. In 2008 she cooperate with a theatre production at the El Warsha Theatre Troupe. She discovered the impact of music and decided to start her own band. Moreover, she worked with the Brazilian musician Gilberto Gil, with whom she sings the song ‘The Night‘, which is on this album. Egypt is the central theme on ‘Turning Back‘. Dina el Wedidi sings sincere about a disappearing future, injustice or love. Her voice resembles that of the legendary Palestinian singer Rim Banna who sings with the same intention about abuses in her country. Against an Arabian background and Western melodies, the music is very accessible. In the opening piece ‘El Fi Belad Agayeb (In Wonderland)’ and ‘El Hozn Ganoub’ it sounds a little like Ethiopian music. Magnificent is the combination of oriental and western instruments, organically arranged by violinist Nancy Mounir. In addition to a guest appearance by Giberto Gil we hear the women vocal group Mazaher in the song ‘Dawayer‘. They originally accompany themselves on percussion during ritual meetings. Dina el Wedidi is a wonderful Egyptian singer of the future who left the past behind with ‘Turning Back‘.
